Although only about five miles separates the British Virgin Islands from the U.S. Virgin Islands, there is a world of difference between them from a visitor's perspective. While both cater to tourists, the British Virgin Islands offer sophisticated and quiet lodging with pure scenery and rich history. Due to the close proximity of the islands to one another as well as the frequency of ferries operating in the area, it is easy to island hop and discover for yourself the riches of the B.V.I. Having been to the B.V.I. and the U.S.V.I. many times, it is apparent that the accomodations vary widely and one has to do careful research. While there are some excellent resorts within the U.S.V.I. which are terrific for families, three of my favorites for adults are in the B.V.I.
Jinx and Jeff Morgan are Americans who were the former editors of Bon Appetit Magazine. After the world of magazine publishing in the U.S., they decided it was time for a change of lifestyle. Although it is now very difficult for non-British residents to purchase in the B.V.I., Jinx and Jeff set their sights on one of the original sugar mills built on the island of Tortola. Converting the original mill to a fabulous stone open-air restaurant, Jinx and Jeff then applied their years as "foodies" to develop one of the best restaurants in all of the Caribbean. They then developed the property into an exclusive resort that is situated over a tiny stretch of private beach. Delicious breakfasts are served in The Sugar Mill, while lunch can be had in the open air pavillion on the beach. Dinner is when The Sugar Mill comes alive with lights twinkling above the ocean and exquisite food is served in the dining room. Jinx and Jeff spend the off-season developing a new menu for the upcoming season, and it is always sublime. Rooms are very well appointed and most comfortable, and the service is perfect. This is a place that is focused on food and relaxing: children over age 12 are welcome with parents. However, it is best for adults looking for that secret hideaway with much privacy, delicious food, and interesting guests. The Sugar Mill is located on the large island of Tortola, so if you want to venture into town or to another part of the island, there is much to explore.
A ferry boat ride is necessary to reach exclusive Peter Island. Privacy here is paramount, and the service is exceptional. Situated on the island with a long stretch of beach, it is a resort from which one never needs to depart. This is a place of extreme luxury with extensive spa treatments, delicious food, excellent service, and extreme privacy. It is well manicured and the rooms are impeccable. Families do come here, but it is really best for honeymoons and adult vacations.
At the very end, the bitter end, in fact, lies one of my favorite places in the world: The Bitter End Yacht Club. Billed as the "luxury water sports resort of the B.V.I.," it is a throwback to the 1950's and 60's with all the service and perfection of 2008. While it appears informal and laid back, the service and sophistication and level of clientele are at the top of the list. Huts that resemble Tiki Huts snake around the long beach and the open lodging provides for most to have a porch overlooking the water. The Yacht Club is focused on the water and everything from beginner lessons to serious competitions to charters are offered here. This is all about the water, and sailing specifically. Whether you're a novice or a master captain, the Bitter End Yacht Club is the ultimate in sailing in the B.V.I. It is absolutely a dream for families and children as there are countless of classes and activities for them. However, adults can escape as the resort is large enough to never feel crowded or too formal. The food is delicious and the service exceptional. ...And the view to Sir Richard Branson's Necker Island isn't too bad either!
There are many lodging options in the B.V.I., and probably my very favorite is a hammock strung between two palm trees on a quiet stretch of beach with clear blue sky above and clear blue water below and only the sound of the ocean to lull me to sleep for an afternoon nap. Wherever your journeys take you, may you always find that peace.
