Flowers Make the World Go 'Round

Why is it that fresh flowers make us smile? Perhaps it is that they are just so beautiful that we cannot ignore or deny them. Perhaps it is that when we think of the person who sent them, we are immediately happy even if it is oneself who has sent them. So where are some of the best sources for fresh flowers? Around the globe there are many, but I'll tell you my favorite three sources.

The Bloemenmarkt in Amsterdam is the long flower market that literally floats on houseboats. Vendors sell every imaginable flower in exquisite colors along with vases and pots and all sorts of accessories. The flowers are picked from some of the Netherland's most exquisite nurseries, and they are displayed along the Singel in a long row that is both bewitching and amazing.

I have been a customer of Cut Flower Wholesale in Atlanta for two decades. The flowers are flown in fresh at 4 a.m. every day, and displayed in a cooler arranged by color. The salespeople are knowledgeable and friendly, and it is always a treat for both the eye and the heart to go and say hello. I am never disappointed with the orchids, greenery, or cut flowers. That they have expanded to include vases, planters, ribbons, and accessories makes it even more irresistible. They are located at 2122 Faulkner in Atlanta, or by phone at 404-320-1619. Kevin Criswell is my salesman, but I will share him only because he is so very, very wonderful!

Of course the Flower District in New York is always a treat. Street after street lined with flowers, florist shops, and wholesalers. How New Yorkers ever find just one special place is beyond me: there are so many fantastic choices that it is a maze of perfection.

So where do you shop? San Francisco? Boston? Nantucket? London? Wherever you are, enjoy the sweet smells of joy that fresh flowers bring.
