More Tricks of the Trade

Some of the most effective decorating tricks happen to be the least expensive...though you might not know it. Try any of the following to update your interiors and have a fresh look with little cost.

1. Put the most expensive fabric on the pillows instead of the upholstery. You still get the effect, but at a fraction of the cost because you don't need as much yardage. Besides, the pillows will give a lot of pop.

2. Add something contemporary to a room filled with antiques. A period room can look dated and tired, but a room that is interesting and eclectic will hold your attention. The item does not have to be expensive. It can be fun, whimsical, or off-beat, but it will provide a diversion and break up the monotony.

3. Leave the floors bare. No one ever does this. Everyone always starts the room with a rug. Be brave sometimes. Let the floors speak, whether they are wood or travertine or tile: let them breathe and be the bones of the room.

4. Put small stools in a room. These can be pulled up next to a sofa or a chair as a side table, or used for seating if you have a group over. Always look for pieces that can "float" in a room and have multiple uses.

5. Use pink lightbulbs when having a party. They make everyone look warm and rosey...even your rooms take on a more romantic, softer glow that makes everyone look healthy and happy. You can find them at any hardware store for the same price as plain bulbs.
