Museum Shopping: Turning up the Unusual

Not that we're in a buying mood after the holidays, but January is an excellent time to make purchases. One of my favorite places to shop are the gift shops within museums. There you will find items to suit anyone: your decorative neighbor, your techno partner, your contemporary co-worker. And you can do it affordably and interestingly.

The Museum of Modern Art, known as MoMA, is my most favorite gift shop. Everything there is enormously creative, often green, and user friendly. My recent purchase of the Highway Bag has proven invaluable. It is a great city or travel bag with enough compartments to eliminate a carry-on bag on a plane. T-shirts that are sold in cubes and an entire kitchen of silicone accessories captivate both buyers and receivers.

I am a devotee of the Met, and can always find a new book or beautiful challis scarf. However, with the increased exhibitions in both modern and ancient, the jewelry has expanded to a far more interesting array than previously found. One of my favorites is the Egyptian Shell Pendant. Although sleek and simple and totally contemporary, this piece is based on a form thousands of years old. It comes in sterling or gold and hangs on a simple black cord which can be replaced with a black leather thong. For $55. it is a terrific purchase.

The High Museum carries one of my favorite things: mobiles. I love the Calder-esque models such as Turning Leaves or Flowing Rythm in Yellow or Red. Ranging in price from $41. to $70., they are fun and affordable for people of all ages.

Don't forget: most museum shops are online so it can be an easy and creative way to solve all sorts of gift-giving. And currently, museum shops are having massive sales, so check out the sites for fun and easy shopping.
