Travel Spot: Asheville

Asheville, North Carolina is not going to be a secret much longer. Tucked up in the mountains of Western North Carolina with spectacular views along the Blue Ridge Parkway, Asheville is also a Southern mecca for music, the arts, and outdoor pursuits. It is absolutely one of my favorite places, and a visit there is always a treat.

People rave about the Grove Park Inn. There is no question that the views from the porch are fabulous, and the big stone fireplace is wonderful. However, I find it sort of like being at an amusement park with people filtering in and out and taking photos. Also, the rooms are not on par with the public spaces so that can be a big disappointment for a big pricetag. Instead, I prefer the Richmond Hill Inn. Although it looks like it might be one of those musty Victorian B&B's, ask for the new Garden Wing and you will have a completely modern room complete with every amenity. The breakfast included is outstanding, and I highly recommend it.

Blue Spiral Gallery is one of my favorites nationwide. The art ranges from Will Henry Stevens, to contemporary regional artists. Malaprops is sure to become one of your favorite bookshops. In a day and age of ordering online, or going to huge national chains, Malaprops is a true bookshop with an excellent selection. ...After all, the fabulous name says it all: it is an intelligent and humorous place where bookworms gather. I love the Grove Arcade, not least because I love all 19th century style arcades. They are so much more civilized and interesting than modern mega-malls. The Grove offers shopping and dining, so permit plenty of time. Black Dome is is an excellent outdoor store that caters to the overwhelming number of outdoor enthusiasts that have moved to Asheville.

If you're looking for a destination that won't break your budget, but will inspire you culturally and athletically, Asheville is that place. They might call it a city, but I hope it always remains the small town charm and eclectic nature that make it such a special place.
